Maruha Nichiro’s "Fish Sausage" goes to space as Pre-Space Japanese food

Maruha Nichiro Corporation (hereafter Maruha Nichiro) is pleased to announce that the Pre-Space Japanese food "Fish Sausage" will be loaded onto the International Space Station (ISS) during Astronaut Koichi Wakata's extended stay on the ISS, which took off for space on October 6, 2022 at 1:00 a.m.(JPT)aboard Crew Dragon Spacecraft Flight #5 (Crew-5).
Space Japanese Food, which developed by Japanese food manufacturers and are certified by JAXA if it meets the criteria, with the aim of easing the mental stress of Japanese astronauts during their long-duration stay in space and helping them maintain and improve their work efficiency. Our canned products "Sardine in Tomato Sauce", "Mackerel in Miso Sauce" and "Broiled Pacific saury" have been certified since 2007.
Pre-Space Japanese Food will be loaded during the certification process when Japanese astronauts are scheduled to stay on the ISS for a long period of time, and if it is found that the food can be consumed on the ISS even if the shelf life is less than 1.5 years, depending on the timing of the launch of the spacecraft that will deliver the space food to the ISS.
The "Fish Sausage" to be loaded on the ISS was approved as a Pre-Space Japanese Food in June 2022, and expected to be certified as a Space Japanese Food in 2023 or later.

The fish sausage is made to retain its good taste for a long period of time through a completely sealed manufacturing process. 1 (75 g) fish sausage provides 196 kcal and 400 mg of calcium.
